Chice

How to play

Chice is chess where every piece carries a die. Capture the enemy king to win. There is no check.

A dot marks a square the piece can move to. A ring marks a piece it can capture.

Roll

Each piece has its own die, shown in the corner of its square. Pawns roll 1–3. Every other piece rolls 1–6.

At the start of your turn, your opponent's dice roll, so you always see their possible replies before you move. If you have no legal move, your turn is skipped.

Move

A piece moves exactly the number on its die, in the directions it moves in chess. Only knights jump over pieces.

The rook rolled 3, so it goes exactly 3 squares in any straight line.

Capture

Queens, rooks, bishops and kings capture the first enemy in a line within their roll. Moving to an empty square still needs the exact number.

The queen rolled 4. The knight is 2 squares away, so she can take it. The pawn on f6 is also in reach.

Knights

A knight's roll picks its jump: 1 = one diagonal, 2 = two diagonal, 3 = L (2 + 1), 4 = L (3 + 1), 5 = L (3 + 2), 6 = L (4 + 2). Knights capture only where the jump lands.

The knight rolled 3: the ordinary chess L. It can take the bishop on e6.

Pawns

A pawn moves exactly its roll (1–3) straight forward and captures one square diagonally on any roll. A pawn that reaches the last rank stays there.

The pawn rolled 2: two squares forward, or take the bishop diagonally.

The edge

If a move would run off the board, the piece stops on the edge square instead, but only if that square is empty. Knights never do this.

The rook rolled 5. Upward and to the left the board runs out, so it stops on the edge.
